Alkolik annesi ile yaşayan 14 yaşındaki Yusuke Urameshi, okulun serserisidir. Herkesle kavga etmekte, okul müdürü dışında tüm öğretmenleri ondan nefret etmektedir. Tek arkadaşı Keiko Yukimura'dır. Civardakı tüm çeteler Yusuke'ye saldırmaktadır. Özellikle de Kazuma Kuwabara, sürekli Yuusuke'nin karşısına çıkmakta ama bir türlü kavgadan galip çıkamamaktadır. Birgün yolda, küçük bir çocuğu hızla gelen arabadan kurtarmak isterken arabanın ona çarpması üzerine hayatını kaybeder. Ölen ruhları "Ruhlar Alemi"ne (Spirit Realm ya da Reikai) götürmekle görevli Botan, ona vaktinden önce hayatını kaybettiğini söyler. Ruhlar aleminin kralının oğlu Koenma, ona geri dönmesinin bir yolu olduğunu söyler. Bir süre hayalet olarak gezdikten sonra tekrar vücuduna kavuşan Yusuke'yi yeni bir görev beklemektedir. Yeni bir güç elde etmiştir ve şeytanların boyutundan (Makai ya da Demon Realm) dünyaya gelen yaratıkları durdurma görevi artık onundur. Çünkü artık o bir Ruh Dedektifi (Spirit Detective)'dir. Şu an Hunter X Hunter'ı yazmakta olan Yoshihiro Togashi'nin aynı adlı mangasından uyarlamadır. Yayınlandığı zaman rating savaşında Dragon Ball Z'i geçmiştir ve Kurama karakteri 2 yıl boyunca Goku'dan çok daha fazla sevilen bir karakter olmuştur
